CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern University Director of Athletics Jeff Barber announced today Head Softball Coach Venus Taylor has resigned effective January 15 and has accepted another head coaching opportunity.
“We are very grateful to Venus for all she did for Buc Softball and wish her the very best in her new coaching endeavor,” Barber said. “I am confident that God already has the right person to follow in her footsteps and our new coach will continue to build our team into a conference championship program.”
Taylor posted a 28-46 record over her two seasons, including a berth into the 2019 Big South Softball Championship Field, after assuming the head coach role in October 2018. During her tenure with the Bucs, CSU had five players recognized among the postseason all-conference award winners, including a pair of freshmen earning recognition by the conference head coaches.
“I would personally like to thank Dr. Costin and AD Jeff Barber for the opportunity to coach at CSU,” Taylor said. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the softball program. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to my assistants, players, parents, and colleagues. I wish CSU continued success in the future.”
The Bucs were noted for their emphasis on defense as CSU posted the third-highest defensive fielding percentage in program history in her first season. Additionally, the Bucs’ focus on fundamentals and execution was noted with CSU possessing the individual conference leaders in both sacrifice flies and bunts both on the roster, while six players recorded at least five stolen bases in a single season.
CSU had posted a 10-9 record in the 2020 season and had won nine of their last 11 games prior to the COVID shutdown with wins of Lehigh, Coppin State (twice), Maine, Cleveland State, Saint Louis, North Carolina A&T (twice) and N.C. Central.
Assistant Coach Stevi Johnson will take on the interim head coach role while a national coaching search will begin immediately.
The Bucs’ 2021 softball schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
