COWNAY – Coastal Carolina junior Zach Biermann hit four home runs and tallied nine RBI to be voted the Community Coffee Sun Belt Baseball Player of the Week by the league’s coaches, it was announced today.
Biermann (West Bend, Wis./Polk State [Fla.] CC) batted .500 (10-for20) for the week, had a hit in all five game, had at least one RBI in four games and scored in four of the five games.
In the 19-3 win over Wake Forest to start the week, Biermann played a big role as he was 3-for-3 with two home runs, a career-high four RBI, three runs scored and a hit by pitch. Two days later versus Radford, he was 1-for-4 with a home run, a hit by pitch and two runs scored. Biermann made it three straight games with a home run as he was 2-for-5 versus Ohio State, adding a double, two RBI and a run scored. In the Sunday doubleheader versus Ohio State and Radford, he was 4-for-8 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk.
For the year, Biermann is batting a team-best .344 and while leading the team and Sun Belt in slugging percentage (.719). He ranks second on the team in hits (22), doubles (6) and home runs (6), RBI (19). In the NCAA/Sun Belt statistics, Biermann ranks among the leaders in:
- home runs (6) 14th NCAA 2nd Sun Belt.
- total bases (46) 23rd NCAA 3rd Sun belt.
- RBI (19) 48th NCAA 5th Sun Belt.
- slugging pct. (.719) 53rd NCAA 1st Sun Belt.
- doubles (6) 95th NCAA 5th Sun Belt.
- runs scored (16) 115th NCAA 10th Sun Belt.
Coastal Carolina will open Sun Belt play this weekend with a trip to Arkansas State (Mar. 16-18). Game times are set for 6:30 pm (CT) Friday and Saturday with first pitch Sunday set for 1 pm (CT).
