SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford guard Fletcher Magee has been named the Southern Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week for his performance Feb. 13-19, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
The player of the week honor is the third for Magee this season and the fifth of his career. He is the only player from the Southern Conference to win the award three times this season and the first since Casey Jones (Chattanooga) and James Sinclair (Western Carolina) both won three times in the 2014-15 season. Wofford now has four player of the week winners this season, as Cameron Jackson was honored on January 2, also a league best.
Magee led Wofford to two conference road wins during the week as the Terriers recorded 10 conference wins for the fifth consecutive season. The junior averaged 33 points, shooting 56.1% from the field and 53.3% from three. He led all scorers in both contests.
At Western Carolina, Magee scored 21 points and set two Wofford records in the process. He broke Wofford’s program record for threes in a career (313), passing Karl Cochran. Magee also broke the record for single season threes (113), a record he set in his sophomore season. He was 6-15 from the floor (40%) and 5-11 from deep (45.4%).
At Chattanooga, Magee led all players with 45 points, a career high for the junior and the most by a Southern Conference player this season, surpassing the previous high by eight points. The scoring output is tied for sixth in the NCAA for single game scoring this season. He set a new record for points in a game in Wofford’s Division I era, passing Ian Chadwick’s mark of 40 points scored on Jan. 2, 2001. He more than doubled his season average of 22 points per game in the win.
Magee made 11 threes, a career high, tying Seth Chadwick’s record set against Mercer on Feb. 15, 1997 for the most in a game by a Wofford player. Eleven threes is also tied for second in Southern Conference history for threes made in a game and is tied for the NCAA high this season. Magee leads the Division I ranks with 125 made threes this season and continues to add on to his Wofford single season and careers threes record he set at Western Carolina.
At Chattanooga, Magee finished 17-26 (65.4%) from the field and set new career highs for both makes and attempts. He was 11-19 (57.9%), from beyond the arc in 38 minutes of action. Most impressive, he didn’t shoot a single free throw to add to his scoring total. He moved into a tie for ninth in Wofford history in scoring (1696 career points) in the win.
Magee is first nationally in total threes (125), threes per game (4.46), fourth in free throw percentage (91.9%) and eighth in both total points (640) and points per game (22.9).
He has scored in double-figures in 73 straight games, the second longest active streak in the country and has sunk a three in 46 straight contests. Magee has scored 20+ points 19 times, 30+ points five times and 40+ once in Wofford’s 28 games this season.
Magee and the Terriers host UNCG Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a battle between two top three conference teams. The Terriers are seeking their first 20 win season since 2014-15. Wofford plays at SoCon-leader ETSU Friday night and concludes the regular season at home on Sunday, Feb. 25 against Mercer at 2 p.m.
