PEMBROKE, NC – Senior guard Detrek Browning scored 30 points, including the game-winning layup with 2.8 seconds left, to lift Francis Marion University to a thrilling 72-70 win over Catawba College, Friday afternoon (Nov. 10) in the opening game of the Peach Belt Conference/South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Challenge.

The 1-0 Patriots will return to UNC Pembroke’s Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court for the second night of the challenge on Saturday at 5 p.m. to face Lenoir-Rhyne University.

Browning’s point total was three shy of his career high and upped his career total to 1,649 points, only 215 shy of setting a new school record. He connected on 12-of-24 field goal attempts, grabbed five rebounds, handed out four assists, and registered three steals.

FMU junior swingman Brandon Parker added 13 points and seven rebounds, while senior forward Warren Specht chipped in 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting, all in the first half.  Senior 6-7 forward Judah Alexander tallied nine points, four blocks, and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Jerrin Morrison led Catawba (0-1) with 26 points and nine rebounds.

A pair of free throws by Alexander knotted the game at 70-70 with 48.1 seconds remaining.  Patriot sophomore Kendall Wall came up with a steal on the Indians’ ensuing possession setting the stage for Browning heroics.

Following an FMU timeout, sophomore point guard Jaquez Smith dribbled to the left side of the floor where he handed the ball off to Browning.  The Columbia native then dribbled to the top of the key and down the right side of the lane, laying the ball off the glass for the go-ahead bucket.  Catawba turned the ball over on a bad pass with 1.8 ticks left.

Francis Marion used a 9-0 run late in the first half to erase a five-point deficit and put the Patriots up 28-24.  FMU held a 37-30 advantage at intermission after Browning scored twice in the final 15 seconds.

The Patriot lead ballooned to 44-32 early in the second stanza, and with 13:49 left, Francis Marion led 50-39. Catawba responded with a 15-2 spurt that put the Indians ahead 54-52. With 7:55 on the clock.

The score was then tied six times before Browning’s final basket.

Francis Marion shot 38.6 percent from the floor and hit 13-of-24 free throw attempts, while Catawba shot 44.6 percent from the field and was 8-of-16 from the stripe.  FMU converted 20 Catawba turnovers into 19 points.
